KSM Instagrammable Guide for Napa First-Timers
If you are a wine enthusiast, is there truly anything better than an incredible sip hitting your mouth while admiring a breathtaking view?
Didn’t think so.
If you are like me, you probably look for the little details when planning a trip, such as the design of the venue; the view the grounds offer; etc. And if you’re planning a trip to Napa, California, or Wine Country, of course quality wine tasting matters, too.
Whether you’re a first-timer or a veteran, this guide is here to serve all of your picturesque needs that are sure to leave your friends, and your followers, in awe.
Napa Valley vs Sonoma Valley
As neighbors separated by a mountain range, both offer wine experiences unique to their regions. Napa represents a sophisticated, glam ambiance while Sonoma wineries are more spread out, offer a laid-back vibe, and are less expensive.
You really can’t go wrong with either, but my husband and I prefer Napa as the food scene is unreal and we like that most of the places are in close proximity to one another. According to The Points Guy, it’s what Bordeaux is to France and what Tuscany is to Italy.
Getting there
We usually rent a car in downtown San Fran, which is followed by a 60-minute drive into downtown Napa. If you are just visiting Napa and not spending any time in downtown SF, then flying into Oakland may be an option with a 75-minute drive up to Napa. San Fran airport (SFO) up to Napa will be at least 90 minutes, and often more with traffic.
Top Napa spots
Below are our top seven spots to hit when in Napa.
Domaine Carneros: If you’re coming from San Fran, this will be on your way. The beautiful building, which looks like a Venetian villa or the Versace Mansion on the outside, provides a lovely background for your pictures. I recommend standing atop of the stairs with your photographer, or Insta boyfriend/husband, at the bottom to capture all of the architectural details.
Alpha Omega: This was the first winery we ever visited and fell in love instantly that we decided to become wine club members. I personally love its transitional design, and the water fountain that is on its large patio.
Auberge du Soleil: If you don’t go here for a boujee brunch, you will miss out. The restaurant is located within the hillside resort, which overlooks the valley. Get a table out on the patio, preferably right on the railing, to admire the view while enjoying dishes that look like a work of art. Definitely a “phone eats first” spot.
Pride: THE coolest winery, mainly due to it sitting atop the mountain. It definitely gives off Restoration Hardware vibes, and the wine tastes like heaven due to the grapes growing right on the mountain versus in the valley. Ask for Mark when booking your tasting tour.
Stags’ Leap and/or Stag’s Leap: Ah, the battle between the naming rights… Honestly, both are beautiful properties, and both have delicious wine. Stag’s offers a very modern, Kimmy K house vibes, while Stags’ looks like a mini castle. If you can hit both in one trip, do it. Watch the movie “Bottle Shock” before you go.
The French Laundry: If you are a foodie, make a reservation here the second you know your travel dates as they book up fast. Chef Thomas Keller offers an exquisite prefixed tasting menu that will knock your socks off.
Mumm Napa: How could we not include bubbly in this mix… While the winery itself is relatively small, it does have a great view. Try their exclusive sparkling reds for a flavor unlike anything you’ll ever taste.
Where to stay
Downtown Napa: Personally, I think the town center is super cute. It’s very walkable, has lovely restaurant options, and even has mini wine tasting shops from the main wineries so you can try their wine without having to drive anywhere. Check out the Oxbow Public Market, which is a great stop for lunch or to pick up a bottle to enjoy in your room. It is a 15-minute drive north to Yountville and a 30-minute drive up to St. Helena.
Yountville: A cute little town in the heart of all the wineries. Because there are fewer lodging options, it will be relatively pricier. A number of fantastic restaurants and small shops walkable right in the area can be found here.
